Welcome to Theta Alpha Psi!

The University of Michigan's first co-ed professional sustainability fraternity.

The mission of Theta Alpha Psi (TAP) is to educate and connect University of Michigan undergraduates passionate about social and environmental sustainability through engaging in education, professional development, social bonding, and activism.

🌲 Humans of TAP: Nina Swier 🌲

Growing up, my sister and I spent our childhood outside. Our world was our backyard, and we spent hours bringing nature to life with creative adventures. I watched as the seasons changed our playground from vibrant piles of leaves to a beautiful frozen-over wonderland, which of course turned into our own personal ice rink. We would dance figure eights around tree stumps and patches of greenery poking through the ice.

But as I got older, what once was a frozen wonderland now turns to slush in the winter. My sister and I stopped being able to skate as the seasons changed. This rude awakening came when we stepped out in our freshly laced skates, and instead of standing on solid ice, fell through to the painful reality that it wouldn’t freeze over. Seeing such a small part of our childhood change so drastically has made me environmentally conscious from a young age.

To me, sustainability is not only about protecting the environment, but also preserving memories of changing seasons. It is about ensuring future generations can enjoy the same outdoors we did!

🌞Humans of TAP: Sophie Zarnosky 🌞

Since I was little, I’ve felt most at home outside. My family spent summers traveling the U.S. in our beat-up 1999 motorhome, camping, hiking, and exploring national parks. Every trip sparked my curiosity for the outdoors more. I wanted to know everything about the landscapes we passed, the people who lived there, and the stories that shaped them. I read every park book and map cover to cover and obsessively became a Junior Ranger at each park. Each place was a learning experience, and with each new badge and fun fact, I developed a stronger passion to understand the environments and communities we encountered.

When we weren’t traveling, I spent hours exploring the woods behind my house with my best friends, getting lost in the creek, learning bird names from my grandma on her porch, or gardening with my mom. Those quiet, curious moments, along with the adventures on the road, taught me to see the environment not as something distant or separate, but as something deeply personal and something we all belong to.

Encountering so many different places and communities gave me a clearer sense of my own place in the world and the experiences of others. It taught me the importance of recognizing how uneven opportunity and access are shared; whether to green space, clean water, or simply the right to be heard and understood. Caring for people and caring for the planet are inseparable, and the wonder our beautiful Earth provides should never be taken from anyone. Everyone deserves to feel at home in the world around them; to breathe clean air, to walk through their communities and nature without fear or exclusion, and to feel connected to the land that sustains us.

I believe the outdoors should be a space for everyone and respected by all: a shared home that welcomes, heals, and inspires all who experience it.

🏔️ Humans of TAP: Sebastian Berenfeld 🏔️

As I sit on this park bench, seeing the seasons flow by like an ever-speeding river, my mind flows through space just as that river does. I collect every piece of driftwood, every experience, every piece of knowledge that dares to take a dip in this ferocious flow of soul. For I am not me without you, without here and there, and without why. Just like how the river is not just the water but everything that flows within it.

This mixture is necessary for us to grow because to have more perspectives is to have more knowledge. To shut down a piece of yourself leaves you unwhole. This same fusion is the universe at its most simplistic level, a collection of atoms connected solely by gravity, electric charge, and nuclear force. So, for anyone who tries to divide is trying to stop the universe from getting to its destination, from letting the trees reach the sky, and stopping you from reaching the stars.

This fusion that can be found everywhere guides me to look inward. I see this same blending from being taught to see the beauty in everything by my mom to my father teaching me to believe in science. I see my physical body weigh the same as the spirit that harbors inside my heart. As my river accumulates more, I become more for I am not scared of the dark of the night just as I am not scared of the blinding truth of the day. I embrace them both because I cannot have one without the other.

This revelation has led me to understand that my dreams are just my future. Not if but when. I want to help create this fusion to bring man and nature together, as one, because I feel that belief is fading. As we stay inside more, we forget that we once were those same animals that roamed the Earth. The planet will grow back even if we decide to drop the ball, but we won’t. We humans are the ones who need to be saved, so as I get up from this park bench to catch up to my future, I share with you, you are daylight, you are night, you are universe, but most of all, you are fusion.

WOW! 🩷🩷 Words cannot describe the amount of gratitude and appreciation we feel for this wonderful group of people. TAP has truly brought together so many amazing individuals with a common love of sustainability and environmental justice! Oh how we love our TAP family! Today we are thankful for our favorite people and the friendships we’ve built within this organization. There is something spectacular about having this community. Thank you TAP, thank you to everyone who has made this organization such a brilliant place to be apart of. We love you all💕

🌲 Humans of TAP!: Charlie Rosenfeld 🌲

Last summer, I went back to summer camp for the first time since 2022–which is a long time in summer camp years. Instead of a camper or counselor-in-training, I was a full-summer counselor. When I left camp then, I thought that would be my final departure from the camp grounds. And yet, in each year since, I grew fonder.

Upon my return, I thought a lot about what it was that I had missed so much: maybe the time spent sitting in the cabin, maybe the hours spent playing cards, maybe the camp food (although I knew even then it was not that).

As the summer progressed, there were a few moments that stuck with me, and it became clear that the connecting thread through each of those experiences was nature. Watching the sunrise over the lake; seeing salamanders in the wild; jumping into a pool of mud: the moments that were most special for campers were the ones where they were able to experience nature in a new, exciting way.

The feeling of observing a natural phenomenon for the first time is like no other. I first felt it at camp years ago, and the feeling is only made stronger by the opportunity to help others have the same experience. To be at summer camp, or really any place where you get to experience nature in all of its beauty, is special–and everyone deserves to have a chance to try it.

🌵Humans of TAP: Margot Frendt🌵

National Park, UT, where I got to see a new wonderful landscape of our country. It’s impossible not to feel small when you look out over the canyons of Utah. We live in a big country, and an even bigger world. So why do some leaders try to make it seem like the United States can’t be a welcoming place for everyone, especially immigrants?

Over Spring Break, I got the opportunity to see the immigration situation first-hand. I, along with a group of other students from U of M, went to El Paso, Texas. But, the city of El Paso is only half of a larger community that combines with Ciudad Jarez, Mexico. These two cities are vastly interconnected, though there is a wall between them. Hundreds of U.S. citizens living in Jarez pass through the port into El Paso to work and go to school every day, so many that the wait time to cross can be up to 4 hours. Previously, a portion of these daily border crossers were also asylum seekers from Mexico, Central and South America. Seeking asylum is the legal basis for migration if you’re facing intense violence and persecution in your home country, but aren’t an internationally recognized refugee.

To explain everything I saw and learned in El Paso, particularly in our current political era, would take many more words than an Instagram caption can hold. So I encourage you to ask me about any questions that you may have, or do additional research for yourself.

Only one migrant shelter in El Paso is still open. There were previously close to twenty. Because of this we couldn’t volunteer to serve migrants on this trip, but we did get to hear from shelter workers, professors, a former Border Patrol agent, community activists, a psychologist, and others.

This information can be really hard to hear. I’m still trying to figure out what I can do. I’ve decided that for now I have to focus on what I can control. I can impact homelessness in my community, the actions of my representatives, and live in solidarity with migrants. At the end of the day, we must always center ourselves in the reality of the most vulnerable (the words of Sr. Diedre, Immigration Lawyer).

🌼 Humans of TAP! - Elsa Pasquariello 🌼

Growing up Swedish meant that respecting and appreciating nature was as good as law. In fact, my first understanding of this social responsibility stemmed from Sweden’s freedom-to-roam principle, allemansrätten.

As a child, I practiced this right by exploring Sweden’s nature as I pleased. My fondest memories are of jumping off cliffs into frigid lakes and picking blueberries in tall, pine forests. Other Swedish citizens, equally exercising this freedom, were excellent models of compassionate treatment of the Earth. They didn’t need to be reminded of the responsibility they had to leave nature as they found it; their obligation seemed innate. I developed this tendency, mirroring the impactful cultural phenomenon as I observed it. My love for the outdoors translated well into my life in Ann Arbor, where I spent most of my childhood playing in the Arb.

As I grew older, however, I realized that the responsibility I felt to protect nature wasn’t shared by all. I yearned each season for my naive summers spent in Sweden, where nature was prioritized about all else. Swedish tradition portrays nature to be the foundational source of culture and health. My passion for sustainability is most simply rooted in my hope that everyone can develop a similar instinctual obligation to care for the environment, and consequently, care for each other.

Growing up hiking gave me a deep appreciation for nature and an even stronger desire to protect it. Walking along rugged trails, with towering peaks on either side felt like stepping into a timeless world.The fresh smell of pine, the distant ring of cowbells, and the sweet taste of the wild strawberries my dad and I would pick along our hikes defined my childhood. The Dolomites, in their silent beauty, almost felt untouched. However, as I got older, I started to notice small changes. The retreating glaciers and patches of forest cleared for lumber made me realize just how vulnerable this seemingly eternal landscape really is.

These experiences were one of the first things that sparked my interest in sustainability. I want future generations to feel the same joy and awe I did when looking out over the vast landscapes that the Dolomites offer. These mountains have taught me that sustainability is so much more than just reducing waste, it’s about protecting the spaces where nature currently thrives. Every wildflower meadow, crystal-clear stream, and rocky cliff holds a beauty that feels raw and irreplacable.

The Dolomites showed me why conservation matters. They are a reminder that even the most pristine places are not immune to human impact. My time in those mountains constantly inspires me to make more conscious choices, so I can keep returning to this magical place that has brought me so much happiness, and brought my family even closer together. 🌶️ 🥬 Sharing some sweet sweet moments from our time last week at the Campus Farm!! 🥕 🍅

🥒The Campus Farm at Matthaei Botanical Gardens is a student-driven living learning lab for sustainable food systems work built around food grown by students for students in a learning community that fosters student leadership development and high-impact teaching and learning opportunities. This past week, TAP joined Campus Farm in hands-on volunteering, aligning with our core values of staying connected to the Michigan community through service learning.

🌽Our members harvested field tomatoes that will be sent out as produce for Michigan Dining, the Farmstand in partnership with UM’s Sustainable Food Program, and the Maize and Blue Cupboard, contributing to local food justice initiatives and supporting a sustainable food system on campus.

🫑We had such a great time contributing to the farm and we look forward to continuing our partnership with sustainable organizations across campus!!

Humans of TAP! Isabella Rozentuler:

When I was younger, being outdoors was a part of many of my happiest memories. Several times
a year, my family and I would head upstate for large camping festivals in New York. These trips
were about more than just music though, they taught me about the powerful and intricate
connection that humans share with the natural world and the responsibility that we have to
uphold and respect it. I remember spending nights around a bonfire, conversations with strangers
who soon became friends, and the sense of community created by simply existing together
outdoors and cleaning up the festival grounds together afterwards.
Through these experiences, I began to deeply value the harmony between human progression and
nature, how we can advance without trampling over the environment. To me, sustainability isn’t
about just preserving and caring for the environment for its own sake, it’s about creating a
dynamic relationship with the world around us that can allow both to coexist long-term.
Going forward in my life and career, I hope to advocate for this responsibility and help people
become aware of how important this relationship really is, how sustainability deserves to be an
overarching theme in all practices.

As we step into April and begin closing out the semester, it’s the perfect moment to pause and reflect—not just on our personal growth, but on the collective impact of our actions, voices, and intentions.

March was Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the resilience, brilliance, and achievements of women across generations. From the trailblazers who fought for change in the past to the women making an impact in our lives today, this month reminds us of the importance of recognition, reflection, and ongoing support. We encourage each of you to think about the ways you’ve shown up for the women in your life and how you can continue to uplift them in meaningful, lasting ways.

In that spirit, TAP was proud to host a successful fundraiser in support of Girls Group, an Ann Arbor-based nonprofit committed to empowering young girls and women. Through mentorship, educational support, and leadership development, Girls Group addresses deeply rooted systemic barriers—racial, economic, academic, and beyond. Growing up Catholic has had a large impact on my life, especially on my values. One Catholic teaching I have particularly valued and embodied is to “care for God’s creation”. This directive encourages every person to respect and care for the earth, which includes all of humanity, animals, the environment, and the entire planet itself. This teaching is part of what inspired me to major in the Program in the Environment (PitE) here at Michigan.

I grew up constantly exposed to nature because my family loves to hike, camp, and travel. I am and always have been a literal tree hugger, and climber. I think my love for nature and my personal concern for caring for God’s creation stemmed from all the outdoor adventures I went on as a kid, as well as growing up surrounded by trees or water at each place I lived. At my grandparents house, I loved to climb the little tree in the backyard, build forts with sticks and broken tree branches, and swim in the pond with my cousins and brothers, no matter how rainy or chilly it was outside or how dirty the water looked. These experiences helped me form deep, lasting bonds and memories with my family and friends, and strengthened my care for the environment.

When I began learning about the environment and the detrimental effects of climate change at school, I became very interested in the subject, and wanted to know what I could do to make it better. As climate change continues to have devastating consequences on the planet, especially for poor and marginalized communities, I believe it is my duty to combat these challenges, help find solutions, and fight for environmental justice, so that every human has an opportunity to live a healthy, safe, joyful life.

my house and go cliff jumping, or have bonfires in my backyard. I never felt like this was a special thing
and I never realized it was something that not everyone had access to.
My community has always taken significant action in land conservation, preserving forests,
wetlands, and wildlife habitats. However, this commitment to environmental preservation unfortunately
resulted in a widely-felt hesitancy towards affordable housing and accessibility for lower-income families.
This struggle, brought up in nearly every town hall meeting, highlights the tension between environmental
stewardship and economic sustainability—issues that deeply affect the well-being of many in the
community.
Growing up in this environment sparked the interest in health and environmental policy that I
hold today. I saw firsthand how conservation initiatives, besides holding great benefits for the
environment, can inadvertently create barriers for vulnerable populations. These experiences led me to
pursue an interest in both global and domestic policies that seek to balance environmental sustainability

My passion for social and environmental sustainability is deeply rooted in my religious background. I belong to Sikhism, a culture that emphasizes selfless service and instills a commitment to equality and community well-being. Growing up, I was surrounded by acts of service, such as offering a free community meal (open to anyone) at every Sikh temple on Sundays. This sense of collective responsibility shaped my belief that everyone deserves equal opportunities and resources, values that align closely with sustainability.
In high school, I first considered sustainability as a career when I interviewed the founder of a nonprofit in Jackson, Michigan for a class I was taking. The organization provides homeless children in the Philippines with shelter, food, and education, ensuring they have the basic rights they deserve. Hearing the founder speak about the impact of his work showed me how sustainability can be extremely fulfilling.
Now, as I decide on a career path, I am eager to combine my passion for business with my desire to create lasting social impact. This could be working in impact investing, consulting for nonprofits, or driving environmental solutions. Regardless of the path, I am excited to see how I integrate sustainability into my future to create a better world.

I grew up spending my summers on a small island off of the thumb of Michigan called Harsens Island. It sits on the point at which the St.Clair River opens up into the lake, and is nestled between Michigan, a few other small islands, and Canada. On this island sits a little home that my dad shares responsibility for with his three older siblings, and in the warm months my family joins the roughly 900 other residents to suck in the sunshine on our little slice of heaven. The island is a beautiful mix of marsh, oak forest, and lakeplain prairie, but I think the star of it all is the willow tree that hangs over the river in our front yard. My childhood was defined by swinging from that willow tree, playing in the grass, and swimming in the frigid blue water.
Harsens Island established my love for the outdoors young, and every year as the Michigan air warms I long for the smell of the river and the shade of my willow tree. As a child I was taught love and happiness in that yard with my family, and since then the feeling of grass between my toes and lakewater in my hair has been inextricably tied to what I love and value the most, my family and our dear mother earth.

This semester, our community engagement team has worked hard to organize many events within the Ann Arbor community and on campus! These events included river clean-ups, hosting tables at festivals, partnerships with other campus orgs, and more!

Our taplings worked on a semester-long project with the AAPS Freeman Outdoor Environmental Education Center & raised money for new library books. Along with this, taplings refreshed & cleaned the bookshelves!

“I was born near Brattleboro, Vermont, where I lived until I was 6. Since then, I have returned whenever possible to reconnect with nature and my life there. When I left Brattleboro, I moved to Ann Arbor, where I’ve been ever since. Growing up there and returning for many weeks throughout the year, I was raised in nature. After moving, it became clear that nature wasn’t as common as I had once believed it to be. As I grew older, I realized that real nature was not only not as prevalent as I had once believed, but it was quickly depleting, and Vermont held a different environment than many other places in the U.S. and the world. I fell in love with being outside and have been motivated to work to preserve the world to the best of my ability.

I remember one time in particular in Guatemala with my brother and my dad, hiking up a volcano called, ‘El Fuego.’ Out of breath and worried about my next step, my head was down and I was concentrated on the hike. My brother reminded me to pick my head up and look around because, as he put it, the view was ‘otherworldly.’ Upon looking up, it truly was. A full 360-degree view of the Sierra Madre mountains, with this volcano perching right above them. Taking a few breaths to look around, I was fully enamored with the sights. I wished I could have stood there for the rest of my life, taking it all in. Although just one experience of many, I think of this as one moment where my passion for the environment came from”

One of our projects was called “Trashion”. We were tasked with making a stylistic piece out of trash or things that we would have normally thrown away.

I was not excited about this project at all. My artistic abilities proved to be limited from my previous project which was a butterfly made out of twigs, flowers, and lemons from my tree. His name was Buford. Yet after two weeks of learning how to sew, looking for trash in my house, and a slight manic episode later I completed the skirt made out of old urban outfitters bags.

Now it doesn’t sound like this class would be very useful in the long run but I realized it wasn’t just assigning random projects that fall under the category of “eco-friendly art” she was trying to show us that there is beauty all around us we just have to use a little creativity to find it. I realized that something great can be created out of anything, this class inspired me to create great things out of not so great situations. It gave me a new perspective on how to live more sustainably by reusing items people might think lacks a purpose as is”

Humans of TAP: Connor Mitzel

“Last summer, I got into birdwatching. While it isn’t quite as exciting as some other hobbies, it has brought enrichment into my life in ways I never expected. Some people think that birdwatching is about using binoculars to peer into the trees, searching for a new bird to add to a list. Others think this activity consists of walking through a park with bird seed, feeding all the pigeons and sparrows. In my experience, it’s even less action-packed than that. Birds are hardly ever active when I search for them. I’m not sure if it’s because they can tell a human is there, or if I always go at the wrong times. Maybe they’re all on their lunch break; I’m no expert.

Birdwatching is a display of patience rather than talent. In order to hear the mellifluous ballad of a Hermit Thrush, I have to sit in silence, waiting for a sign of life from the trees. Sometimes I wait awhile; sometimes I don’t have to. Even when I know I’m in the right habitat, I don’t always hear or see the bird I was expecting. It’s a sort of mystery and anticipation that brings me a great deal of pleasure. Maybe I’m on a hike looking for a Bald Eagle, but instead I spot some cute little Olive-sided Flycatchers (a personal favorite) up on the end of a dead tree. Nature is so much bigger than myself, and I love when birdwatching reminds me that earth always has a little trick up its sleeve.

While I wait in silence for birds, I begin to notice things that I had always been too rushed to notice. From the beaver bites in tree bark to the dried up leaves decomposing into the soil, interactions between different systems in nature are all around me in a complex, interconnected fashion. That same principle goes for interactions between humans, businesses, and the environment. Sustainability encompasses those interactions, and I want to dedicate my life and career toward creating harmony between the natural world and the business world”

“Since first grade, my 15-minute bus ride to school in Bangalore, India, was my unfiltered lens into reality.
A reality with cows that would bask on the streets, motorbikes in and out of traffic, road sellers, and their
miniature markets. In this reality, something stuck out. While the same roadsellers and domestic animals
came every morning, plastic bags and trash continued to exponentially overflow past just sewers,
bleeding into the grasslands of this beautiful city.

It was interesting because in class the chapter on ‘land pollution’ was only a theory to me, yet, seeing the
tangibility of the science is what struck my interest. I hated that I saw people harming the environment,
but I didn’t know how I could make a change. The transformation of theory into practicality became clear
when I began my first internship at Karo Sambhav which allowed me to understand how to make data
accessible to conclude current campaigns through circular economy analysis.

Following my first practical experience, there was a sense of adrenaline that began to be associated with
the thought of being a pillar in the notion of change. This ‘rush’ translated into working with companies on
impact investing, advocacy through the educational sphere of environmental science, and in-depth
research on the water movement in my community and methods of improving sustainability. These
experiences taught me that the most impactful environmental work often starts with observing and
addressing issues in one’s immediate surroundings.

Inspired by the tangibility of science, I hope to continue my pathway toward environmental change by
being a part of organizations like TAP and pursuing a degree in Earth and Environmental Science along
with PITE to build this foundation”

“I was fortunate enough to spend most of my summers in the Irish countryside. Some of my fondest childhood memories are filled with running around the same fields my mother did years prior, spending hours catching up with my cousins on the hay bales in the backyard. Hikes with my granny through the local forest park were another focal point of my experience, facilitating many missed conversations of family stories. While my summers mainly consisted of exploring my family’s farms in the Midland region, the highlights of my trips were always discovering the wonders of the country’s coast. I still have yet to see a natural landscape that rivals the beauty of the Giant’s Causeway.

I haven’t been back to Ireland since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. I long to go back to visit my family and rekindle relationships that are difficult to keep over the phone. I recently realized, though, that my pining for Ireland is deeper than my familial connections. The land fostered my long standing connection to the environment and served as a backdrop for so many of my cherished memories. It kickstarted my love for the outdoors and opened my ears to the detriments of the changing environment. I can confidently connect my passion for sustainability to my childhood summers spent in Ireland, a place I hold dear to my heart”

But everything changed when I was a freshman in high school. Our movie outings continued, but this time my mom insisted we see a documentary, “A Life on Our Planet” by David Attenborough. This story didn’t feel like it had a happy ending. I felt anxious that our planet was being destroyed, I felt guilty that I was contributing to it, but, most importantly, I felt urged to make a difference.

Eager to take action, I joined a local environmental organization, collaborating with the team to organize events that promoted awareness. This newfound passion guided my college search, leading me to prioritize schools with strong environmental programs dedicated to making a real impact. Joining TAP has further fueled my commitment to environmental action, while also connecting me with such genuine people”

Humans of TAP: Gabrielle Kiminyo

“Ever since I was little, I’ve been interested in nature and animals. I loved feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin and the coolness of the grass on my feet. I live in a rural area so my house is surrounded by woods, canals, and rural areas that are extensions of the Florida Everglades. My whole childhood I would see deer, beavers, gators, bunnies, and vultures roaming my neighborhood and often in my backyard. There was even one time wild hogs showed up to my birthday party. Being surrounded by diverse ecosystems and wildlife made me interested in wildlife conservation and sustainability.

Also, my family has been blessed to travel to many places outside of the US, so I have always been fascinated with the beauty and biodiversity of other countries. This picture is from a trip my family took to Brazil last summer where we explored The Tijuca Forest National Park.

As I learned more about the challenges facing biodiversity—habitat destruction, climate change, and pollution—I felt a growing sense of responsibility. My love for animals transformed into a desire to protect their habitats and promote sustainable practices. This shift in perspective led me to pursue a career in sustainability, where I could combine my passion for nature with meaningful action.

Specifically as a woman of color I want to protect marginalized communities that face environmental injustices. I am currently learning Swahili, so I hope to focus my studies in East Africa and work as an international environmental lawyer combating resource exploitation and the effects of climate change”

“My childhood was one with a lot of time spent in the car. Whether it was a typical trip to my grandparents’ house a couple hours away, or a 50-hour or so round trip with my family out west, we drove. When I tell people this they are usually pretty surprised, which is understandable, but in my opinion those hours were some of the most influential moments in my life.

Especially before the implementation of my dad’s hotspot for car rides, I would spend the majority of my time staring out the window appreciating everything that passed by my eyes. I was lucky enough to travel to all corners of the country, meaning the environments and cultures changed dramatically in front of my eyes, exposing me not just to the beautiful destinations, but all the people and places that filled in that space.

My observant nature was and is not limited to the car. I grew up in northern Michigan surrounded by lakes, forests, dunes, and rivers with a family that loved to camp and explore. From as young as I can remember I was spending weekends and weeknights hiking, swimming, kayaking, etc. This type of upbringing instilled an instinct for being observant and curious as to how things work and why things look the way they do. My closest friends would tell you that I may randomly go silent, but in reality, I am appreciating something that caught my attention. I am proud to be studying the sciences behind the beautiful world I have come to love; the one that I viewed through the car window, and the one that I grew up surrounded by. I am beyond excited to learn more about the social and environmental sustainability issues that we face today through TAP”
